  1. Saint Nicolas bishop of Myra died December 6, 346 AD. He was also known as Nicholas the Wondermaker. Not from this web site, but from others I've read he gave toys and coins to children. Not many toys around in the 4th century. He'd carve animals, flutes and other things out of wood and leave them at the door of the children in town. He was accredited with performing many miracles through the Grace of God. Martin Luther wanted to discourage the figure of St. Nicolas in the 16th and 17th century. So protestants changed the gift giver to Christkindl (cris kin dle) which eventually changed to Kris Kringle. (Kringle wasn't real. It's thought of as a sprite-like child.) This is also when Christmas moved from Dec 6 to the 25.
