MOBO awards, why do we have awards for black music only, is it racist?

We dont have any awards for white music only so why have the MOBOs? Where I live we have to make sure everything is equal, my kids dont sing christmas carols at school so that other religions aren't offended. Why then is it OK to have an awards ceremony for only music of black Origin? I dont personaly have a roblem with any race, hey we're all just people at the end of the day. However there is certainly a racial tension building around here and I honestly think the powers that be are to blame, its them who are imposing unrealistic rules about race!

  1. i hate racism, but it works both ways,if there was a white music awards then everyone would be up in arms,so agreed why is it then ok for a black music awards?
  2. you took the words out of my mouth
  3. In the beginning that was the only way black music or black anything would get recognition. Yes it is a sort of reverse racism. Racism begets more racism.
  4. i remember ub40 played/or got an award at the mobos, the crowd booed non stop cause the singer was white.
  5. The CMA's is basically White people's music awards. Last time I looked Tina Marie has gotten awards, gold and platinum albums for her contribution to R & B and Soul. I dare say in 10 more years she will probably get a lifetime achievement award. Also I'm sure if Robin Thicke continues down the path he going he will get some sort of award for his contribution to R & B. My point is the music may have a Black audience but not all the performers are Black.
  6. Good question, and it is something I have thought about in the past myself. Whats funny is, a black person can win an award even if they are in what could be considered "music of white origin", say for example heavy metal music (for argument's sake). So a heavy metal band with black musicians in would be able to win, but a heavy metal band with white musicians wouldn't be able to win! Thats what seems messed up to me. I know a white person can technically win if they do "music of black origin", for example Eminem. I think about it and think, well its good that the "black" community can have a celebration of music etc, but it does beg the question, why is that ok but it wouldn't be ok to have a music of white origin ceremony. Its not just race that this works with though. Girls are allowed to join the boy scouts but boys aren't allowed to join the girl guides! lol I don't think there is any clear or easy answer to it, I think that society controls what is deemed ok and not ok, and its influences and influence changes over time.
  7. Maybe because white people would sooner sit around griping and wailing about it all day than actually get off their whining ar$es and do something about creating and promoting a white award system? And it's easier to complain about what somebody else has than to do something about getting the same for yourself? And if you feel that strongly about that whole ridiculous Christmas carol thing why not pull your kids out of school until Christmas is over and make it plain it's by way of protest? Or would that be too much like doing something about the situation when it's easier just to complain about it all? Not that I give a damn about Christmas - it's a revolting time of year as far as I'm concerned; nothing more than an opportunity to get involved in brinkmanship and vulgar commercialism. The spirit of Christmas is alive and gluttonous. Whatever happened to self-help and actually standing up for what is believed to be right? And do people really have any right at all to complain if they're not prepared to do anything real or constructive - or even destructive - about the things that bug them?
  8. you are quite correct in one respect this is a case of reverse racism. now if they were to have awards for Soul or funk or jazz or blues instead of black music awards then that i think would be more acceptable dont you think? The awards should be made for the content of the music submitted and not for the colour of the person submitting it
  9. The reason is that black people tend to listen to different types of music than what is heard mostly on multiethnic radio stations. As a result, black music genres are often not well represented in Award ceremonies such as The Brits/Grammys etc. But white people who play and sing this music are given awards and are welcome at the MOBOs. It is not an exclusive party for people of only one race. You could have an awards ceremony for classical music too, which is not of black origin, it is of white origin. Would that be racist? Think of it this way. You could have an award ceremony for Restaurants and Chefs of all genres, and you could have one for Indian Restaurants and Chefs alone. Is that racist? I don't think so. It is just focusing on one genre of an art instead of many.
  10. I second Michael. The answer to why is because no one is doing anything about it. Whites should have learned by now that no matter how bleeding heart liberal our hands are, no matter what we do to acquiesce them, we are still going to "offend" minorities, regardless of how tangible or imagined our offense. So we should quit caring about offending them or anyone else, walk down our own path, and squash those who whine along the way. The CMT awards are Country Music awards. A small handful of black people listen to country, yet the awards are still called Country Music Awards, not White Music Awards (and black people have received Country Music Awards). Rap crap and hippity hop, however, is only big today because white people buy it and fund it. Millions of white and other nonblack people listen to the garbage, yet it is still called Music of Black Origin Awards...not the Rap Crap and Hippity Hop Awards. These instigative drama junkies who would play pansy victim if the tables were turned are intentionally being racially divisive TO RACIALLY DIVERSE audiences....you can spin that anyway that makes you feel better....but it is pretty obvious who is being the melodramatic race-baiters and who aren't.
  11. it seems so obvious to me that the blacks whine and complain way more than whites.I think we should have white music awards and white television channels like WET they have their BET...but blacks would be all up in arms! it's ridiculous! how does everybody think we are going to be EQUAL when you have black only things...but yet can't have WHITE ONLY things because blacks get freakin upset! DOUBLE STANDARDS!!
  12. no its not white celebs are nominees every year it just means the music most black people like and its not just black music only... try watching and see what its really about and if you have watched it why are you complaining!
  13. They don't mean race, they mean black MUSIC. White artist have ben nominated all the time.
