What is going to happen in 2012 when the icebergs melt in the North Pole?

There are some climate models that are predicting the complete meltdown of the icebergs in the North Pole. Is this the prediction the Mayans saw? Why isn't gaining more attention.

They are melting now.... And 2012 please... Only God can tell you when the ice will melt. If you don't believe in God, why believe 2012?
There are no climate models that predict anything particular in 2012. They do predict melting of the ice sheets and glaciers, and this is indeed already happening at an alarming rate, but it's nothing to do with any superstitions about Mayans or 2012 - that's pure nonsense.

It's not likely the ice caps will completely melt by 2012, but if it ever happens sea levels will rise significantly and certain coastal areas/cities will be flooded. Don't count on 2012, though.

I watched a special on the discovery channel and they said it would happen by the summer of 2012. The experiment was fairly recent. They said they have models showing at the rate they observed it will be completed melted by 2012. There are numerous sources stating that this will happen. I think people are natural procrastinators and they are going to wait until the last minute. I dont think Baraka has a good answer for this one
The only thing that will happen in Dec 2012 is the silly Mayan prophecy nonsense will go away, and probably be replaced with the next nonsense end of the world theory, and a number of new authors will make their fortunes off the silly people who buy their books on the subject as have previous authors going back over a century with many such theories, most long forgotten. There are no models that are claiming the "North Pole" will melt in that sort of time frame and even those that suggest it may melt over the next decade are only talking about in summer as regardless of GW the Sun will still be low on the horizon and gone for weeks during winter and sea water will still freeze when the temperature drops. General info: for several of the answers above, icebergs come from glaciers (land based) Arctic sea ice does not produce icebergs and is on average only 2m thick, even if it does melt it will do nothing to global sea levels.
Global warming has nothing to do with any of the trash being spread about 2012 being the end of the world. The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world - the current cycle ends and the next one starts (no different than the calendar you have on your wall - it ends on Dec 31 2009 and a new one starts up).
Basically nothing special for most people. Sea level would not rise appreciably since most of the ice is already in the water. The fresh water lens might distort the flow of the Gulf Stream and cause it to get damn cold in the UK. If it indeed was followed by the inevitable cooling phase of a cycle, it could start another "ice age". Bottom line is that no real evidence of anything drastic is really happening other than a cyclical ocean based warming cycle and a shift in dominant wind distribution patterns. The good news is that Russia will be stepping up its claims on the Arctic along with Denmark, so that the hidden resources can be exploited while the US and Canada are stuck with cap and trade quotas. The bad news is that shipping will commence through the NW Passage and of course the fight for it to be International Waters will accelerate so that every dipstick country flying "flags of convenience" can allow their ships to pass through Canadian waters in an unregulated fashion, with the support of the UN. You can be sure that the IPCC will lend some sort of "science" supporting the remedial effects of the shipping for the cause of "global warming". My guess is that they will support the jettisoning of marine junk into the ocean as a platform so that the Polar Bears can hunt seals more effectively. Perhaps it will make the case that the icebreakers pile the ice into nice convenienient "platforms" so that the bears can use them as fishing "islands". Rest assured it will be some sort of nonsense such as this!
If the icebergs melt in the North Pole then it would result in increased sea levels and floods thereby resulting in lot of disaster and epidemic diseases, which will be detrimental for human kind as well as all living forms on earth.
When it does not happen will you recind your suport of the theory of global warming and admit it for the scam it is? Will the oceans rise at all? If u add ice cubs to a glass and the level is set does the level rise when the ice melts? That is the question.
