How do you make a traditional British Christmas pudding?

I know my question is out of season, but I have always wondered- what is a British Christmas pudding? In the various film adaptations of a Christmas Carol, Bob Cratchett's family has a Christmas pudding, and sets it alight... I assume it's standard bread pudding glazed with alcohol? How do you make it?
