gift cards for christmas..bad idea!?

someone was telling me that buying gift cards for christmas this year is a bad idea. i guess because a lot of the stores are going out of business but not telling the general public which ones they are. supposedly there plan is to make as much money before christmas as they can and tell people to buy gift cards and what not, then there going to turn around and go out of business so all the gift cards will be useless. has anyone else heard about this? i dont want to go out and buy gift cards and then find out it was a waste of money.

2. gift cards are a great idea. choose stores/restaurants that you know for sure won't be going out of business; such as Best Buys, Target, Starbucks, Apple Bees, Kohl's, a near buy mall, etc. I wouldn't choose Circuit City tho. MERRY CHRISTMAS
3. yes I think gift cards are a bad idea. I have heard the rumors of that scare you are talking about, but stores would not be able to ever get away with that. SO i wouldnt worry about that and go with the giftcards. They are always a great idea becuase the recipient can use them whenver they want!

5. I find that the 'universal gift voucher' (the money) always goes down well. You aren't restricted to any one shop or group of shops.
6. It is a bad idea for certain stores, specifically circuit city, bed bath and beyond and some others. Wal-mart is doing great now! So those cards are a good idea to give. It is true that when you buy a gift card and a business files bankruptcy, that they will not honor that gift card. So I recommend that you stick with either walmart cards or those to supermarkets, large food chains or VISA
7. i like gifts better, it make x- mas better I think, but I wouldn't mind getting an i tunes gift card, last yr , i got like 3
