What is the origin behind Earth's Magnetic field producing the north Pole and the South Pole?

The earth has a magnetic North and a magnetic south pole to which the compass points. But how does it happen to be that way. What creates the magnetic field within itself.

  1. The core consists of pretty much pure iron.
  2. The earth's core is made of iron, and it spins around very rapidly, which creates a magnetic field
  3. God made it!
  4. Iron core, plus the fact that the core is molten. It spins at a different rate than the mantel, creating the magnetic field. Some say that this may be why Mars is currently "dead". The planet cooled to the point where the core solidified and Mars lost its magnetic field. This allowed harmful radiation from the sun to reach the surface and poof! Goodbye lifeforms.
  5. Rotating(spinning) iron core
