Where did the custom of Christmas caroling come from & do people ever come to your door & sing carols?

Does anyone know where the custom of Christmas caroling comes from, what is the purpose of going from house to house singing songs like 1)Silent Night 2)Deck The Halls do you ever get people coming to your door at 3 in the morning singing Christmas carols?
