How did they measure the distance fomr the north pole to the south pole? (In order to find the perfect middle?

How did they measure the distance fomr the north pole to the south pole? (In order to find the perfect middle which is marked the equator?) I got smart with my teacher and Iasked, she said I don't know and I said she HAD to know! So she said I HAD to find out how...I can't find it on google or anything! Please help =D
