Do you think the invalid claims Russia has made on the North Pole will cause the next world war?
Recently Russia placed a flag on the floor of the North Pole, (also previously done by Canada and the United States at separate times in the last hundred years or so). The Prime Minister of Canada is starting a trek to the North Pole, accompanied by an armed force including subs, fighter jets, and other military units, to refute that claim and take back what is "rightfully Canada's land". Do you feel that this aggressive move to show superiority in the northern Arctic, will result in the next World War, as more than one country is looking to claim that as their own piece of land?

- Doubt it - The Russians really haven't done anything . . . It's a bit like when your dog marks his territory on another dog's pissing spot . . . Odd but nothing to be too overly concerned about . . .
- I kinda doubt it. I dont think the other 4 countries care. Its already been decided by international law. Its equally shared by the 5 countries. US, Canada, Russia, Norway and Denmark (because of greenland). They all have 20 %. The other countries could care less if they put a flag there. Plus for it to even be developed we are talking probably 200-300 years away. ie there is no ice there anymore. So maybe they will fight over it in 300 years, but you would hope technology is advanced enough that we are not using oil in 300 years. Plus lets say the ice is gone, its way too deep. We dont have pipes that couldnt handle the pressure. How are you even going to put a pipe down their that can old the pressure, when the pipe isnt pressurized. It would squish the pipe, hell they might never have the technology to get it out. Thats why none of the other countries care.
- NO but Canada's sure pissed
- Some Russian which drank to much vodka lost a bet and put the flag there..Nothing is gonna happen
- I seriously doubt it; the flag placement on the bottom of the artic circle is nothing more than a dog and pony show. Nice for the 6 o' clock news, but nothing else. The Russians have better thing to worry about, like their War in Chechnya and more pressing local matters.
- Nah. We got flags on the moon right?
- russia is still our enemy, and they can not be trusted.
- Placing the flag is a purely symbolic gesture. Like saying when astronauts planted the US flag on the moon now means the moon belongs to the US. What really matters to their claim to sovereignty is that they have undertaken scientific research and have shown their ability to patrol and access the area. That is what bolsters their claim to the north pole. When I was in the Canadian army, I went on a number of "sovereignty missions", where we'd live in igloos, travel around by dog sled and snow mobile and plant flags at certain points in case random polar bears wanted to know what country they were in. Good times. It's a silly game, but international relations can be very silly.
