How do you think the breaking of the North Pole ice could effect us?
So,it is stated that this year is the first year for the North Pole's ice to break. How do you think it could effect us?

- It would affect us. 1. Global Warming and Greenhouse Effect : Rising temperature leads to melting of ice which would lead to sea levels rising. 2. Animals?: I think the animals like polar bears that walk on the ice in the North Pole and all will probably be endagered. x. MY own assumption 1: decrease of sea level would cause a change in currents??!?! x. My own assumption 2: When the breaking of the ice occurs, it will drop the ice into the sea causing waves.
- Yes I do. I am really scared. I think this is the beginning of the end for all of us.
- According to the U.S. National Climatic Data Center the ice is growing. See: http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/columnists/story.html?id=332289 According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change & NOAA, since 1998 there has actually been global cooling. This despite the fact that Carbon Dioxide levels continued to rise, CO2 is obviously not about to destroy the planet. A NASA satellite launched in 2002 has proven all of the doomsday scenarios false. Notice, none of this is front page news, probably because the advertisers are the same multi-billion dollar corporations that are getting the muti-million dollar "carbon credits." Besides, politicians & media folk want us to believe that we need them. By the way, the pictures of glaciers calving, shown with every news story about the "horrors of global warming" happens every summer. See: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23411799-7583,00.html Even Congress has found the "hockey stick" climate charts fraudulent: http://www.heartland.org/Article.cfm?artId=19734 Also, thankfully, the Polar Bear population has grown from an estimated 5,000 in 1995 to between 20,000-25,000 in 2007.
- well, after the ice from the north pole breaks, it will start melting in the oceans which will rise the sea level. this will cause inundations and if all the ice at the poles melt, the whole planet earth will likely be inundated killing all land species. the melting of the ice is mainly caused by global warming. the temperature everywhere is going to rise and animals and plants that like to live in colder area will fail to survive. and since everything in the food chain is connected and relies on each other, many more species will start to disappear too - including humans.
- Melting of the North Pole ice does very little. It's all sea based ice so the total displacement is equal to the amount of water that would be produced by it melting. Therefore no sea level rise. There could potentially be problems with the influx of cold fresh water but there is nowhere near enough to cause massive problems. If you're going to worry about melting ice then worry about the land based ice sheet in Greenland.
- FA is almost exactly correct. Sea based ice displaces water almost equal to volume it contains. Think of a glass of ice water and it's volume before and after the ice melts. However, land based ice, i.e. Greenland and Antarctica, does not have this same benefit and as a result it's melting would cause the oceans to rise and create problems for low lying coastal areas and island nations.
