What is a Kris Kringle?

I have heard people say they will be doing a "Kris Kringle" this year and I'm wondering what it means? Who is Kris Kringle?? Yeah but what does it mean when they say "we're doing a kris kringle"? are they playing santa claus or celebrating xmas..or what?
