What is the difference between Old St. Nick and Kris Kringle?

Are Kris Kringle and Old Saint Nick all mixed up into the Santa Claus fairy tale? Were they the same person (given differnent names by region) or two different people altogether whose ideals were combined and expanded in creating what we now know as Santa Claus?
