Why is the country Christmas Island called Christmas Island?

1. Captain William Mynors named it that because he arrived there on Christmas Day 1643.
2. From memory, some British guy landed there on Christmas Day, that is why it was named Christmas Island. Also, it is not a country, it is Australian territory.
3. Christmas Island was named on Christmas Day 1643 by Captain William Mynors, the Master of a passing ship, of the British East India Company. The Territory of Christmas Island is a non-self governing territory of Australia; administered from Canberra by the Australian Attorney-General's Department.
